Closeboard fencing in Broadstairs.

Feather-edge closeboard on concrete posts and gravel boards. The Broadstairs workhorse fence: does the boundary job, handles the wind, and looks right on almost any garden. Priced £75 to £110 per linear metre installed.

What closeboard actually is

Closeboard is a site-built fence. Tanalised softwood posts (or concrete slot posts, which is what we default to on the Broadstairs coastal belt), horizontal arris rails, vertical feather-edge boards nailed to the rails with a 20mm overlap, a gravel board at the bottom holding the boards clear of ground level, and a capping rail at the top. Nothing panel-shop about it. It goes together on site to whatever length and to whatever height you need.

Why we default to concrete posts here

On the Kingsgate and North Foreland clifftop belt, and anywhere inside about a mile of the sea front, timber posts have a hard life. The salt in the air accelerates the rot at ground level, and the wind loading on a 6ft closeboard run is significant. Concrete slot posts (100mm x 100mm, mortice slots for the arris rails) last for the working life of the fence, will not rot, and take a much bigger sail load. The concrete gravel board at the bottom keeps the timber feather-edge clear of ground moisture, which is where most fences fail first.

The Broadstairs pricing band

Standard 6ft closeboard on concrete posts and gravel boards runs £75 to £110 per linear metre supplied and fitted. The variables are: run length (longer runs come down per metre because setup cost spreads), access (a garden the fence can be delivered straight into is cheaper than one that needs a barrow through the house), and whether the old fence needs stripping out and disposed of. Photo-quote via WhatsApp is usually enough to get inside the band; a site visit locks the exact number.

Post depth and set

Post-holes are augered 600mm as standard on sheltered inland runs, 750mm on the Kingsgate clifftop belt or anywhere with real wind exposure. Postcrete for standard runs, mixed concrete for gate posts and end posts. The Thanet chalk substrate sets the concrete beautifully once you are through the 200 to 400mm topsoil layer. On St Peter's and Reading Street the ground can be softer and we tend to go deeper on gate posts.

Turnaround

Standard 15 to 20 metre run is a one-day job for a two-hand team, longer runs are two or three days. Old-fence stripout and disposal adds half a day. Holiday-let landlords in Broadstairs are welcome to book work in without being on site: photo quote, book, we send completion photos when done.
